Why Do We Need Human Arts?

The saddest thing about 21st century is that art can be created without an artist. For people who value technology, this is a pinnacle of progress. You longer have to browse the internet for any photos, you can generate photos that would be owned by you alone for a small price.

There are artists all over internet who take commissions and their business are being affected. Even worse, the art produced by A.I is just a blend of many artworks that are available on the internet. A short story prompt to an A.I will generate you a patchwork of short stories written by others.

It’s legal plagiarism.

There is no originality in A.I but I would also say that there is no originality anywhere. Originality is dead. All of our art is repetition of what has already been said. We play upon a handful of stories given to us by our ancestors. A finite number of them has the potential to produce infinite combinations of art.

Our stories are a blend of our ancestor’s stories, our surroundings and our story.

According to Willa Carther, 'There are only two or three human stories, and they go on repeating themselves as fiercely as if they had never happened before'

Since there is no originality in humanity then, using A.I shouldn’t cause a dilemma, right? No. My problem with A.I is not it’s lack of originality but rather the lack of essence in it.

It’s always important to know our voices and to represent ourselves. Our voices are our own. We are subjected to many things such as culture, surroundings and traditions which makes us who we are. Through all of these experiences, we create art and share with other humans.

Art is not needed for survival. In fact, art is a proof that shows how irrational human beings are. We suspend our disbelief willingly to enjoy something we know isn’t true. The characters, the settings and the plot is not real. None of the characters exist yet we speak about them as fondly as we speak of our family. We celebrate fictional characters even though they are fictional.

By doing this, we are only recognising the human behind the artwork. Their experiences and the experiences of many others have blended beautifully in their art and we appreciate it. We understand it as humans do and feel it.

Art is a divine method of communication between humans. It’s a medium that transforms selfish experiences to selfless teaching. A writer writes for themselves but their work speaks for everyone universally.

The essence of an artist can never be captured by A.I. This cannot be replicated. It is best to enjoy art as it is. Human art might be imperfect but it is what it is: human.
